Potsdamer Platz by night...

*

My brother is celebrating his 50th anniversary today.
Halfway through.
At least.
If not, he should definately tell me how...

He got many books that day.
Really many books.
Even if I hadn't a reading problem still, I wouldn't read any of them.
From me he got a Sparschwein and a rose.
A living rose.
It was the last one which the garden shop had...

I for myself have celebrated my 50th nearly not.
It's simply a number...

Lungs.
Nearly any song is for singing with it... Loud.
At least if you do not behave.

(We are all to young to die.)

This Berlin picture has a detail view,
which I don't wanted to put it in a separate picture.
So I put it aside...
I have another picture of the backside of these wall remnants.
This one will become another Berlin picture...

The next film I like to see will be EX_MACHINA.
I have no idea what this film is about,
but already one and a half months ago I got a hint to that film...

Spock is dead.
He died at an age of 83.
Thats somewhat young for a Vulcan.
I think I will miss him...

When I was young, Enterprise was my favoured TV series.
And it was mainly because of Spock.
I drew some "comics" of it.
I still know that I drew him yellow so he was different from the rest.
He also got a different name.
But somehow it was still Mr. Spock.
I dunno what adventures I created for him.
These "paintings" don't exist anymore.
Maybe for the better...

The diagonal solution of the problem.
I have seen the hole in the wall only from a far.
In my opinion they can rip off half of the wall with no problem.
Shortened that way it would be somewhat more valuable, maybe.
If the wall is that valuable today, they shouldn't have level it down at Bernauer Straße and everywhere else.
If it was such an important document of time, it should had remained at many places.
So it is what it is: a piece of a wall of the past.

The visit of the TV Tower was an early Christmas gift from my mum.
It came with a Lichterfahrt over Unter den Linden and over the Kudamm and a visit of the Christmas market in front of the Schloss Charlottenburg.
In the TV Tower we had a meal at the restaurant where the plattform turned around once every half an hour.
I dunno when but I know that I was already in the TV Tower once when I was young.

The blue sheep were on the Schlossplatz for only one day.
They have their own web site: www.blaue-schafe.de (only in German).
The Humboldtbox on the other side seems to have no web site currently.
It was built in the tradition of the Infobox at the Potsdamer Platz.
For me it is really more uglier than the Infobox and the temporary art hall called "White Cube".
But after all it is only temporary, too.
It is supposed to be replaced by a 590 million euro expensive ugliness called Humboldtforum.
This will be a building with the fassade of the former city palace of the imperialistic aera of Berlin.
With dome.
If not the shortage of money will throw a monkey wrench in this plan.
I'm still for a park with lots of trees at this place. And in the woods there would be two signs:

Here was the former city palace.

Here was the former palace of the republic.

For this photo I have trained already several times.
It shows the roof of the Sony-Center, partly through the inactive fountain.
And through the glassy roof of the passage of the CineStar cinema.
Still I think that the photo can be made better. I'll try again next time.
Nevertheless I've put this view as my new background picture for Mac OS X.

At the Potsdamer Platz with a view to the Ritz-Carlton.
This photo was made two days later as the photos before.
Again I was at the Potsdamer Platz.
Again I wanted to see "The King's Speech" in the CineStar.
This time it worked out.
The film was against the expectations not boring.

The two houses are dramatically slanted in the photo.
I've not corrected this so that it looks as frightful as it is.

The Otto-Braun-Straße is the lengthening of the Greifswalder Straße.
I have electronically distorted the picture according to the persective to let the Fernsehturm and the Park-Inn not look that slanted.
The real star of the picture is the blue sky, though. Yes, folks, there is really sometimes a blue sky over Berlin.

Sunday there were crowds and crowds of people at the Pariser Platz and Unter den Linden.
Even Monday there were many people around.
And many photographer. Everyone with tripods like me.
And they were very persistent.
I was gone soon before the fall of night to make other pictures.

Also this image is manipulated.
But not in that way one could think of.
The pillars of the Volksbühne are really as shown and with this a nightmare for people who fear to get stuck in narrow crevasses, stairways or shafts.
Five of the eleven pillars are added lately and hide the entries to the building.
You cannot pass them. It is summer holidays at the Volksbühne.
The manipulation of the image is only the removal of a bike, a graffiti, and a woman which lied on the meadow.

The image is from one of my rare visits to East-Berlin.
I was there to watch "Summer Wars" at the Babylon cinema.
"Summer Wars" is an anime which didn't impress me much.

Also this sculpture has plate at the border of the basin. On this you can read:

Robert Rauschenberg
*1925 Port Arthur, USA
Riding Bikes, 1998
Neon auf Metallständer / Neon on metal rack

The plate was obviously installed before 2008, because in 2008 Robert Rauschenberg died on Captiva Island, USA.

The sculpture simply looks better in the dark... To get a better impression I have again raised the saturation and twiddled a bit on the gradiation curve. The original was again somewhat pale.

Untitled (Boxers), 1987
Lackierter Stahl / Coated steel

The year of birth of Keith Haring was in fact 1958.

The building in the background is the Kammermusiksaal (chamber music hall).

To get from the Müllerstraße to the Hauptbahnhof is not that difficult. You only have to enter the Bus 120 to the east and drive with it until the last stop. The Hauptbahnhof has real fans, who write a Blog (in German) about their fandom. In 2007 the station was awarded with the title "Bahnhof des Jahres" (train station of the year) by the "Allianz pro Schiene". In 2008 the station got the Brunel price for "Eisenbahndesign".

I think this is "fascinating". For me the Hauptbahnhof is a similar steel-glass-concrete-monster like the Potsdamer Platz. (Although its good for some impressing pictures.) For the Hauptbahnhof as for the Potsdamer Platz its applicable: High wall makes men small. It is like a gigantic machinery of which you can't figure out the function. A monument for the complex modern world, in which complexity sometimes ends in itself.

Of course there is also a Wikipedia page about the Hauptbahnhof. There you'll find some nice pictures of the station in different views, details and states of completion.

The first and the last pictures of my own tries are looking somewhat weird. I have scaled and distorted them in different ways, but they stay like they are: The station looks slanted. In the first picture for instance the right, more distant block seems to be broader than the left, more nearer block, although this shouldn't be. They should be at least at the same size. In the last picture the glass roof looks a bit inclined, although I think that I have made that picture standing under the middle of it. If I get me another camera in the future, I probably will take some more pictures of the station.

A comment to the opening times of the shops in the Hauptbahnhof wanted?
Ok, here it is: Ullrich at the Zoo at the station Zoologischer Garten, which was degredated to a regional station by the DB, has open from Monday to Saturday from 9h to 22h and at Sunday and at other holidays from 11h to 22h. And Ullrich at the Zoo doesn't sell only travel related articles. And the gas station around the corner has open nearly 24-7. So the prohibition of the opening on Sundays at the Hauptbahnhof is somewhat ridiculous. It think that the prohibition won't remain for long.

Although I'm not pro Sunday opening at all. Sure this will produce some employment, but these jobs should be paid properly. They are not, and so the Sunday opening is real capitalistic exploitation.

Four views from the Potsdamer Platz/Sony-Center, which every tourist might have more or less better in his collection of Berlin pictures. I'm still practicing. - The last motive was already a Berlin snapshot in 2002, but at that photo the sky was dark. In the night the Sony-Center simply looks better. - At the second photo I thought the reflection of the center roof was a malfunction of the camera, but from the chosen point of view the fassade really reflects the scenery. The third picture shows my favoured cinema. In no other cinema I was more often (in my life). At the day of the picture they played "Alice in Wonderland" in 3D and in the original version. A really nice film.

So this is the start of the 8th annual set. The very first one started also on an April 18 in 1999. The pictures from then are still rotting on my harddrive. Some of them are way better than the pictures I'm taking now. I think this is a matter of time. Currently the times for good pictures are bad. I have to wait and see.

This is it.
The 100th picture of the 7th annual set.
An annual set which lasted five years.
Originally it shouldn't lasted that long, but circumstances worked against it. It was not a good time for pictures. Maybe in the future there will be a better time.
Probably this page will disappear into a subdirectory and will make place for the eighth annual set, which maybe won't take that long. Maybe with a new camera, maybe with the old one. Who ever needs twelve megapixel, a propriety accu and face recognition..?

Tuesday it was really chaotic.
Enjoyed the life in full trains. (Okay, this play on words doesn't work in English.)
I normally use the S-Bahn exclusively.
On Tuesday I needed a hundred minutes for a route that normally takes an hour.
In the morning and in the evening.
On the way back I was downright stranded on the S-Bahnhof Schönwalder Allee.
On the ring there were driving halfed cola tin cans. (That are older S trains which were originally painted red.)
Wednesday it was nearly everything normal again.

This was also really short.
But nobody mentioned it at the inauguration of the Kanzlerbahn.

There are really many photo blogs around there - one truly cannot watch them all. Many of them are already discontinued when visiting them for the first time. Even formerly successful normal blogs are already dead now. And this is something one can understand. Maybe you'll get no or only a few return of it, maybe you'll get as much resonance that you can't handle it. At some point you're loosing interest in it. At some point you're leading a real life again without protocolling it.

Here some pictures from Berlin by water. They show "Departing from the Greenwich Promenade", "Spandau with St.Nicolai church, city hall tower and arcades", "Power station Reuter", "Spandauer Sea Bridge", "Spandau sluice with Moby Dick", "At the Westhafen with Power station Moabit", "Reichstag as seen from water", "Train station Friedrichstraße as seen from water", "Bode museum as seen from water", "Berlin Dome as seen from water", "Suisse embassy with cows" and "Plötzensee sluice with sundial".
